The present war in Ukraine, and world attention to its seemingly unlikely Jewish President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has renewed attention to the Jewish communities of Ukraine, past and present. Although people of Jewish ancestry constitute only perhaps 100,000 Ukrainians today out of a population of 40 million (as a result of 1.5 million Ukrainian Jews killed in the Holocaust), the Jewish communities and the Jewish culture of the Ukraine have had an outsized influence on both European and Jewish history and culture.
Eitz Chayim will be hosting a lecture and discussion on this complicated history as a backdrop for understanding current events by Elissa Bemporad, Professor of East European Jewish History and the Holocaust at Queens College, who has researched and written extensively on this topic.
Donations to support this event would be welcome but not required. Professor Bemporad has agreed to donate half of her honorarium to Razom for Ukraine.
